A profile picture is a different problem from a photograph
Most photographs are looked at. A profile picture is glanced at, beside your name, at a size where detail does not exist. Composition, an interesting background and a clever pose all disappear at that scale. What survives is the shape of your face, the contrast between you and whatever is behind you, and whether you are looking at the camera. These templates optimise for what survives.
Stored as a square, shown as a circle
Almost every platform keeps a square and then masks it to a circle, which quietly deletes the corners of your photo. Framed tightly enough to fill the square, you lose the top of your head; framed loosely, you end up small in the middle. One face, several contexts
The picture on a work profile and the one on a personal account are doing different jobs, and using a single photo for both is a compromise rather than a decision. Generating two or three from the same face model lets each one suit where it lives — with no second shoot, and without a four-year-old photo someone else took standing in for you indefinitely.
Common questions about templates
- What resolution do these come out at?
- Full resolution, far above anything a profile field needs. Every platform downscales, so starting larger is strictly better. Keep the original and you can crop it again for a site that wants a different shape.
- Do they have to be face-only?
- No, but tighter is usually better. A head-and-shoulders crop is the most legible option at small sizes. Wider framing with a setting behind you earns its place where the profile is displayed large, which in practice means desktop layouts and creator pages.
- Can I use the same picture everywhere?
- You can, and consistency across sites genuinely helps people recognise you. The exception is where the tone differs sharply — a photo that suits a personal account can undersell a professional one. That second case is what the professional templates are for.
